Lithium-ion Battery Shipment Updates

Lithium-ion Battery Shipment Updates

Lithium batteries have become a primary topic of discussion from both shipping and consumer perspectives due to the risks they pose. There have been recent releases from regulatory agencies regarding provisions and warnings concerning the safe shipment of lithium-ion batteries.

On Feb 22, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), an arm of the United Nations, had issued an interim ban effective, April 1, 2016 for all shipments of lithium-ion batteries as cargo in the hold of passenger aircrafts.

Provisions to the 57th Edition of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) concerning lithium-ion batteries will be effective beginning April 1, 2016. IATA’s Lithium Battery Guidance document can be found here.

“Lithium-ion cells and batteries must be offered for transport at a state of charge (SoC) not to exceed 30% of their rated design capacity. Cells and/or batteries at a SoC of greater than 30% of their rated capacity may only be shipped with the approval of the State of Origin and the State of the Operator under the written conditions established by those authorities.”
